Period Poverty means being unable to access hygiene and sanitary products and having a poor knowledge on menstruation usually due to financial constraints. In the UK, 1 in 10 girls cannot afford to buy menstrual products according to a representative survey of 1,000 girls and young women aged 14-21.
Students in the UK are missing out on vital school time because of this issue. Not having access to a safe and hygienic way to deal with menstruation can have profound consequences; particularly on a girl's education.

The BBC have released a short informative video interviewing a woman who has been through period poverty and has not been able to afford basic hygiene products to deal with her menstrual cycle.
"Not having enough money to buy pads or tampons was heartbreaking and stressful."
How Period Poverty affects Education
People who menstruate can have a negative experience of school or college if they become uncomfortable, distracted, or unable to participate due to lack of protection or odour.
This negative experience can have long-term consequences. Missing school repetitively affects future earning potential, self-esteem and health outcomes.

Ultimate Goal
The first step is to normalise menstruation and destroy the taboos around the natural process. The policy must be enforced to make menstrual products, sanitation, and hygiene easily accessible. Here at Period. we want to provide young people with menstrual products to help them stay in school.Â

Period products are expensive and quality products even more so. But, there's another investment that's taking up school's budget: complimentary condoms. You can't avoid periods, but you can certainly avoid sex. Why split the budget between a necessity and a convenience? Why provide a generous amount of condoms when students won't use them when there are females struggling with the inconvenience of periods everyday.Â
As you can see above, both locally based schemes allow easy access and ways to get involved.
