University of Hull Icon – Reimagined

A symbol can be your own graphic definition picture of a word that resembles meaning. It can be reusable and used widely, publicly if a large group recognise this as a shortened meaning. The University of Hull logo is combined of 5 symbols relating to 5 different words:

  • Torch/Flame: Enlightenment
  • Crown: Kingston (Hull)
  • Dove: Larkin
  • Rose: Yorkshire
  • Fleur de Lis: Lincolnshire
the University of Hull Logo including the symbols which have different meanings to the university. (findvectorlogo.com, n.d.).

Looking at this graphic, there could be numerous of designs for these symbols that could’ve been picked. I chose the crown to recreate as it is a common word that could be redesigned into a lot of different ways. I drew the crown in a more calming way with rounded corners and diamond shapes that cut out a band at the bottom.

The University of Hull crown symbol redesigned into my own symbol using Adobe Illustrator.

Patterns use said symbols above and are placed in order to cover a large space and look more aesthetically pleasing. They usually include a colour scheme and can be used as backgrounds for images or fills for shapes etc. I used the newly designed crown symbol and created a pattern to make it more exciting and bring attention to what its meaning truly is.

My previously designed symbol turned into a pattern to seem more pleasing to the eye. This design was created in Adobe Illustrator.
